- Move closer to God this week
- Bless someone in a practical way this week
- Celebrate God in community this week
In Luke 10 there are three key stories that paint a picture for us of what it means for us to live as disciples. These three stories remind us of the three lived values of Move, Bless and Celebrate.
The first story we see is Jesus sending out the 70. He reminds his disciples that there is a harvest and he is sending them out in vulnerability to go and find it! It’s challenging and uncomfortable and they will feel like ‘lambs amongst wolves’ but he is commissioning them to go and find people of peace to be Good News to. Disciples are those who are sent out to bless others.
Later, Jesus replies to the question from a Pharisee by telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. In this, we are reminded of the generosity involved in living in community with others and loving ‘our neighbour’. The Good Samaritan gave above and beyond at great personal cost, all for the benefit of another. Jesus wants disciples who love and serve one another, as we celebrate God in community.
And, as he continues on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus visits Mary and Martha. Here, through their conversation, we are reminded that there is a time to stop and be still with Jesus, not rushing around, avoiding him and attending to all the other business and noise. We can ‘choose the one thing that is better’ - that is to be disciples who move closer to God, who sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to him.
What exactly might these “lived values” look like in daily life?
M - Move closer to God this week
How? By hearing God speaking to me through his Spirit and changing me through daily Bible reading, prayer...
Why? To learn something new about God, to allow God to modify my deep-seated views and attitudes through his Word, to be challenged by God to change my behaviour and lifestyle to become more Christ-like.
B - Bless someone in a practical way this week
How? I could invite a neighbour for a cup of coffee or a meal, give a lift in my car, lend a hand, mow a lawn, babysit, offer to pray for someone in need...
Why? So that I can demonstrate the love of Jesus and bring a taste of the grace and generosity of God's kingdom into someone else’s life.
C - Celebrate God in community this week
How? Through attending a Sunday worship service, my MBC small group or Missional Community…
Why? To demonstrate that God is a God of community, who loves and cares for everyone and wishes to enrich their lives.
